WEEK 2 ROUND UP

Well, thus ends week 2 of Animation Mentor. I did many variations of my final pose, and this was the result. I am not super happy with the right hand. I tried it many different ways and this was how it ended up. You tend to lose it in the hips of the character. I did a ton of sketches for this too, a lot of them never got posted, and a lot I just did not like enough to explore further. It was a good week, and I got a lot of good feedback, compliments and critiques on what I was doing. I am excited to get my e-critique from Elliot.

I watched my lecture and assignment materials today. There was a lot of good stuff in it about planning and thumb nailing, Two things that i need work in. One of my big goals in this class right now is to force myself to thumbnail and plan my work out before getting into the computer. The computer is merely a tool to do the art. The assignments this week are to do a bouncing ball, that is a soccer or basketball, and to skech out and pose a character who is excited. I will pose progress throughout the week.

I am super tired today, but I think that I am going to do some sketches and planning stuff for a few hours before bed tonight to get started on stuff.

Going good so far!

Week 2: Monday sketches

The assignment for this week is to do some gesture sketches of different poses, then pick one, and pose our character into that pose. I got a few gestures down tonight, about 5 pages worth. I scanned a few of them and uploaded them. I am not really sure if I will use any of these. But here they are anyhow.

Animation Mentor WEEK 1 Round up!

Well, week 1 was rather liad back to be honest. We did not really have any assignments, just had to learn the site, intorduce ourselved to our Mentor, the other students, get our profiles set up and so forth.

On Monday of this week I had a Q&A with Shawn Kelly, one of the founders of the school. He is an animator at ILM, he has worked there for about ten years now, and worked on many films there, including the new Star Wars trilogy, and hejust finished up on Transformers. It was really cool to get to talk to him, he was very down to earth. It did'nt really feel all that formal, it was more like just shooting the shit with a buddy, which was really neat. We talked about the films he worked on, why he wanted to get into the industry, things like that. In turn he asked me why I got inot the industry, what I was doing now, what I liked about animation, where I wanted to go, and what I thought my strengths and weaknesses were. After that we all just sort of talked about different stuff. Really neat guy.

On Wednesday I had a Q&A with my Mentor, Elliot Roberts. He was also a really awesome guy. he is currently working at Pixar and he just finished working on Ratatouille. Which, in itself, is a really awesome thing. He started working at Blue Sky, worked on Robots. It was really neat to hear him explain the production process of Robots, and it made sense why the movie turned out the way it did. He also worked on Charolette's Web, and a few other films as well before Pixar. We had the same questions as with Shawn Kelly a few nights before, and Elliot seemed really accesable as well, which is good. Both Q&As were suppose to last about an hour and both lasted almost three hours. As I said before they were both really easy to just chat with. I found out my mentor is a whiskey drinker, that is to say that he drinks fine liquor. He also can't stop quoting Anchorman, which is fine because I often have the same problem.

Everyone in my class seems really cool. Most have never even touched Maya before, though there is one guy who is an animator at the game studio that makes SOCOM. Everyone also seems very passionate about this stuff too, which is good because I really want to push my work as hard as I can, and get as much feedback as possible. I also plan to post my progress on this site, so if you wish to leave a critique I beg you to do so. It only makes my work better and better.

As for next week, we have some sketching and posing excercises for our homework. Looks to be a hoot. The Animation Mentor Bar B Que is out in San Francisco at the end of June, I plan on going out there for it. I am going to see if Margaret would like to come along as well. Should be a fun weekend, plus it never hurts to start making some contacts.

Well, my 2nd week of AM starts tomorrow. I am looking forward to actually digging my nails into some actual work. Look for some first pass work by mid week!!!

Keep animating!!!
